How Many Bosses Are in the Google Popcorn Game?

There are four bosses in the Google Popcorn Doodle game, and each one runs its own round. Every boss has four or five phases, and the attack patterns change with each phase.

Most matches don't reach the last boss. According to the community Google Doodles Wiki, only about three players usually remain after the Salt round.

How Boss Rounds Work

Each round, a boss enters the arena and fires attacks in phases. Survive every phase and the next boss arrives.

Shield, Heal and Catch & Throw kernels each using their ability against boss projectiles
Your kernel ability decides how you handle each boss
  • You start with 2 hearts. Most hits cost 1 heart.
  • Splash damage hits every kernel inside the splash radius, so crowds are dangerous.
  • In Solo mode, losing both hearts means you pop. In squad mode, you crawl and can be revived.
  • The last kernel (or squad) standing wins, even if the bosses aren't finished.

Butter Boss: Phase-by-Phase Strategy

The Butter boss is a golden slab and your warm-up round. Its attacks are slower and easier to read than anything that follows.

Butter Phases 1–2

Attacks come in simple, spaced-out waves. Use this time to learn the controls and find open space.

  • Stay near the edges of the arena, not the center where crowds form.
  • Don't use your ability unless you must. Enter the Salt round with it ready.

Butter Phases 3–4

The pace picks up and patterns overlap. Phase 4 is where careless players start popping.

  • Watch for overlapping waves and move before the second one lands.
  • Catch & Throw players: This is a great time to hit rivals while the lobby is still packed.

Salt Boss: Phase-by-Phase Strategy

The Salt shaker is the lobby killer. It fills the screen with small, fast projectiles, and most players pop here.

Salt Phase 1

The opening spray is dense but predictable.

  • Shield players: Block the first wave deliberately. The Doodles Wiki notes a well-timed shield can destroy these projectiles completely.
  • Everyone else: look for gaps in the spray instead of running away from it.

Salt Phases 2–3

Projectiles come from more angles at once.

  • Make small moves. Big panic dashes carry you into the next line of salt.
  • Heal players: There's plenty to eat here. Top up to two hearts.

Salt Phase 4

The final phase is the tightest of the round. If you survive it, you're usually in the top three or four.

  • Stay calm and dodge, then pause to read the next wave.

Fire Boss: Phase-by-Phase Strategy

The Fire boss is a flame entity with five phases. It uses area attacks that punish anyone standing still.

Fire Phases 1–2

Flames cover large sections of the arena.

  • Keep moving in wide arcs. Standing in place is the fastest way to pop.
  • Watch the ground for warning signs before flames land.

Fire Phases 3–5

Area attacks overlap and the safe zones shrink.

  • Heal players: This is your best round. Pick off stray projectiles to stay at full hearts.
  • Shield players: Area attacks can slip past a mistimed block. Rely more on movement.

Microwave Boss: Phase-by-Phase Strategy

The Microwave is the final boss, an electric orb with five phases of orbital patterns that circle the arena.

Microwave Phases 1–3

Attacks sweep in circular paths.

  • Move with the orbit, not against it. Running against the rotation puts you in front of every sweep.
  • Stay in the outer ring when the inner rings fill up.

Microwave Phases 4–5

This is the endgame. There are few players left and lots of projectiles.

  • Catch & Throw players: Fewer targets and more space make each throw count.
  • Heal players: Plenty of projectiles means constant healing. The wiki notes that, in theory, several Heal players could eat every projectile in Phase 5 and stall the match.

Boss Survival Checklist

These six habits work against every boss in the Google Popcorn game:

Six habits for surviving every boss round
  1. Watch the wind-up. Every attack telegraphs. Move before it lands.
  2. Avoid crowds. Splash damage hits groups of kernels at once.
  3. Save your ability for the hit you can't dodge.
  4. Dodge, then pause. Panic moves walk you into the next attack.
  5. Stay near your squad so revives are possible.
  6. Play safe late. With five players left, the player who makes the fewest mistakes wins.
